Legal Research Materials: FolioViews Software: "ADVANCED QUERY SEARCHING

Most researchers do not need to worry about Advanced Query Searching. The majority of searching may be done using the customized templates (which, behind the scenes, automatically turn your search into an Advanced Query search--to see these prior searches, use Query Box, Query For, and up/down arrows).

Users however have the option to do their own Advanced Query Searching using the Query Box.

FolioViews permits very sophisticated searching by combining boolean searching with both field and level searching.

Advanced Query Searching requires some knowledge of boolean commands. The basic query operators are and &, or |, not ^, and exclusive or ~. To search for an exact phrase, enclose the phrase in double quotes ' '.

You can also control your research by narrowing the focus of your query by changing the scope from the entire infobase to a specific field. For example, a statutes database may be formatted into fields such as chapter number, ministry, text, name, definitions, headings, and margin notes. By limiting the scope to a specific field, you are changing the 'view' of the database to just 'records with hits' within the specific field.
