Some Americans planned a tour of Britain to trace their ancestry and decided to visit the various Churches that their ancestors were associated with throughout history. Their itinery was carefully planned.

They arrived first in Scotland and did the usual visits and went to a small Presbyterian Church in Kinross to see what they could find. The Church was beautiful but plain in keeping with the faith. In looking around there was a room at the back with a plain telephone and a sign. “Speak to God - £10,000 a minute”. The Americans asked the pastor what this meant. “We are a pious group”, he said, “and as such have the ability to speak to God and we use this phone and allow others to do the same.” “Wow!” the Americans thought.

Next they visited Northern Ireland and in their travels visited the family’s RC Church in Cork. Such a beautiful Church and they were delighted to find some family documents. In their tour of the Church, at the back, was a beautifully ornate booth decorated with a Cross, a golden phone and a sign. “Speak to God – for £10,000 a minute & three Hail Mary’s”. Astonished they spoke to the priest and he explained. “Ah, to be sure, we are the Church of St Peter and so have a direct line at a very reasonable rate”. The Americans left feeling very impressed at the faith found in the two Celtic countries.

Next on tour was England and their visit included a Synagogue in Golders Green. They enjoyed a very informative visit and the tranquillity of the building and concluded by speaking to the Rabi. They told him of their visits to Scotland and Ireland and of the phones. He quietly took them to the back of the building and there they saw a quality but practical phone with a sign “Speak to God £10,000 a minute or £15,000 for 3 minutes”. The Rabi turned to them and said, “Do you think his Chosen People would be left out in this land you are visiting?” The American visitors were suitably impressed and left with a warm feeling of satisfaction and delight in visiting the counties of their forefathers.

Now to the final leg of their tour. Full of excitement. They were now heading to Wales. They entered Wales along the M4 in sunshine. It was though the sun’s rays made a path along the way. Up through the Rhondda they drove admiring the views and along the Heads of the Valley road and then to a small village “Eglwys-yr-Haf”. There was a small stone non-conformist Church. Beautiful and neat. With a little trepidation, in they went. There they were met by the Old Lay Preacher, who welcomed them and gave them the history of their family in the village. He was knowledgable on these matters, as you would expect. In the afternoon they sat and had a cup of tea. During the conversation the Americans told him of their 3 visits and the special phones and quietly asked, “You don’t happen to have a special phone, do you?”. “No, no. No SPECIAL phone: but we do have a phone” pointing to a table by the wall. There, on the table, was an ordinary phone and a small card next to it. “Speak to Our Father – 10p a call”. They were surprised and shocked and queried the simple lay out and price.

The Preacher put his friendly arms around his new American friends and said quietly.
“Gwrando Plant (listen Children), you are in God’s Country now…only a local call, see”
