The Monmouth Rebellion

The Monmouth Rebellion: "England's West Country, including Somerset, was a Protestant stronghold at the time of the death of the Protestant King Charles II in February 1685. The new King, Charles' brother James, Duke of York, was Roman Catholic. Charles II's Protestant but illegitimate son, James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, got the idea that all England would support him in a Protestant rising. Monmouth landed in the West Country and encouraged a Protestant revolt with a rabble of brave but untrained West Country yokels and miners, with plans to capture Bristol and then march on London to claim the throne. The Monmouth Rebellion, which lasted all of five weeks, was a bloodbath for the Protestant rebels, both in battle at Sedgemoor, and afterwards at the 'Bloody Assizes' - the trials conducted by Chief Justice George Jeffreys. The Duke himself was taken to London and executed.
James II's pitiless treatment of Monmouth's followers shocked the country. Over a thousand were condemned to death or slavery in the West Indian Plantations. "

I wonder if any of my distant cousins were involved ?

FEEFHS - Eastern European Genealogy - FEEFHS: "The Federation of East European Family History Societies (FEEFHS) was organized in 1992 as an umbrella organization that promotes family research in eastern and central Europe without any ethnic, religious, or social distinctions.

It provides a forum for individuals and organizations focused on a single country or group of people to exchange information and be updated on developments in the field. While it primarily serves the interests of North Americans in tracing their lineages back to a European homeland, it welcomes members from all countries. "

Why Shaking the Family Tree can be Bad for your Health

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter

I discovered an online article published by the Telegraph in London with a cute title of Why Shaking the Family Tree can be Bad for your Health. I thought to myself, "This should be a cute, tongue-in-cheek article." Wrong! Author Elizabeth Day is serious.

"Genealogists want psychotherapy to be made available for people who stumble across unpleasant discoveries while researching their family history.
The Society of Genealogists is one of several organisations concerned that amateur historians are not sufficiently prepared for the secrets they might uncover in their family records, and could need counselling to help them through the emotional process.

Else Churchill, a genealogy officer at the society, said: 'People can be dealing with many serious things - from discovering your ancestor was a rapist who was deported to Australia to finding out you are adopted. Burying secrets causes problems and you have to be incredibly sensitive when dealing with such issues.
'Having trained counsellors on hand could help. My job as a genealogist ends when I have put the whats and the whos together, but there needs to be a continued support.

'Many of Britain's four million amateur genealogists will end up discovering illegitimacy, bigamy, adoption and previously unknown relatives in the course of their research.
Diane Mattinson, 48, an office manager from Bicester, Oxfordshire, discovered that her great-grandfather, James Phillips, had never married her great-grandmother, Elizabeth. " continues

and ends

There are those, however, who might be disappointed if they fail to find some dark secret.
Last year, a survey conducted by 1837online.com, a genealogical website, found that 10 per cent of amateur historians hope to unearth a family skeleton.

which gives a little spice to their hobby

Wales 1774 or 1777 details

Wales 1774 or 1777 details which tell us about life in those days.

I have just made the first two jpg from the 215 years old engraving.

Heir or Probate, Genealogy

Forensic Genealogy

Many of these cases will be initiated by an established and legal client to us for our firm to act on their behalf in the research phase of identifying and locating the heirs/beneficiaries to the estate.

The Compensation for us may be by either a "contingency fee", "hourly fee" or some other defined contractual compensation. In these cases our fees and expenses, along with those of the Trustee or other client including the expenses incurred by them in administering the estate, will ultimately be charged to the estate for these costs. The end result, here, is that the heirs and beneficiaries, once identified and found, will assume the net payable proceeds resulting after all expenses have been paid

1837online is a spin off from that trade

1837online.com is based in London, England and is part of an independently-owned business that is dedicated to providing high quality genealogical services to professional and non-professional researchers. 1837online.com is a sister company to Title Research, an independent business which has existed for nearly 40 years and provides probate and succession genealogy services to lawyers and corporate and public trustees around the world. Uniquely in its industry, Title Research provides a range of services endorsed by The Law Society of England & Wales and is also certified by the British Standards Institute as an Investor in People, with the total quality standard BS EN ISO 9001-2000 and with the standard for the secure management of information BS 7799 -2:2002.

As part of its day-to-day work, Title Research used to consult the microfiche version of the birth, marriage and death indexes extensively. Some time ago the business took the decision to computerise these records for internal use. However, we soon realised that it would be possible to make the computerised records available to other interested parties over the internet – and 1837online was set up to do this.

Representatives from both 1837online.com and Title Research are members of the Family Records Centre User Group

Contact details for 1837online.com are as follows:
