FreeCEN - UK Census Online Project: "Have YOU ever thought of the benefit of the U.K. Census data being centrally available on ONE database, and being able to trace your ancestors from 1841 to 1891?

This project aims to provide a 'free-to-view' online searchable database of the 19th century UK census returns.

The number of volunteers has grown since its inception in 1999 to 125 in December 2000. It doubled to 250 for June 2001, over 500 in 2003 and currently has 2000+ as of July 2005.

We are constantly looking for new volunteers. We need help with Transcribing and Checking. We transcribe and check from Micro Fiche and from CD's, so you have a choice depending upon which Census year you volunteer to help with. To contact the Coordinator for a County that you are interested in helping with, please look at the Transcription page.

As well as the 1891 Census we are also working on the 1841. 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. We are continually adding new transcriptions. For further details of how we are progressing please look at the following statistics page on http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html

The last update of the FreeCEN database for 2007 was on 28th December.

In all 98500 entries (over 20%) of the 1861 Census for Somerset is now available to search for free on FreeCEN. In addition the 1871 census is beginning to take form with the third Somerset piece published this week. Six 1891 pieces are also available to search.
