Usability of web pages

useit.com: Jakob Nielsen on Usability and Web Design

in an email Greetings from Shanghai :-

. . . For most of the things we tested, there was NO DIFFERENCE in the usability guidelines between Asia and other parts of the world. This is similar to findings in our studies in Japan and Korea.

For example, take financial journalists in Hong Kong. A hugely important group to consider when designing the investor relations (IR) and public relations (PR) sites for any big multinational corporation, which is why we tested these users to get material for our upcoming seminar on presenting information about a company on its website. Most of what Hong Kong financial journalists need from your website is the same as the financial journalists we have already tested in New York, London, and Copenhagen.

In other words, the differences between the peoples of the world are not as great as they are sometimes made out to be. At least not when it comes to the usability guidelines for Web design.

Midlands UK digital library

Midlands Historical Data

"We create digital images of local history books and directories so you can read them in the comfort of your home. At the moment we offer these images for sale on CD, and the whole collection is now available on-line.

All our books are searchable, and you can do the search from this web-site. Once you find a relevant reference, you can immediately link to an image of the relevant page.

For the Genealogist ...
... this means you can quickly find that elusive ancestor - particularly when the Census can't help (in the last 100 years, between censuses, or before 1840), or discover where that unknown house, street or village is located.

For the Local Historian ...
... this means you can quickly find a reference in the many local history books in our library.

This is a non-profitmaking project focussed on the Midlands - the old counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire (including Birmingham) and Worcestershire, although we do have a little material from neighbouring counties.

We are aiming for depth of coverage in the Midlands to give you better service, and this will improve with time. We are not going to widen coverage to make money, and we only charge to cover the costs of equipment and software."
