Vision of Britain | History of the Census of Population: "Since 1801 the Census has created a uniquely detailed record of our changing communities. For data on your chosen town or village, search by place from our main home page. This part of Vision of Britain is about the census itself, including:

* Listings of all reports published from 1801 to 1961, and all tables in those reports. Unless you ask, we list only reports and tables for which we hold data or text."

Bonfire night in Denmark tomorrow

The Brocken - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
"Now to the Brocken the witches ride;
The stubble is gold and the corn is green;
There is the carnival crew to be seen,
And Squire Urianus will come to preside.
So over the valleys our company floats,
With witches a-farting on stinking old goats."
Goethe described the Brocken in his Faust (written in 1808)

Family Trees 2.0

Family Trees 2.0 - BusinessWeek Online - MSNBC.com: "DNA Ancestry Project participants pay $119 to $318 for a testing kit and membership, replete with online tools such as family tree building and surname searches. Users can keep their genetic info confidential or limit access to family members. But to search for matches in the worldwide database of users, they have to make their own DNA public. So far, Wong says, the site has signed up more than 2 million participants, with as many users in their 20s as there are older ones.

Others, including Google (GOOG), also seem to see powerful potential in linking people with generations of great-great-great-great-grandparents. Google recently invested $3.9 million in 23andMe. The startup [created by Google founder Sergey Brin's new bride, Anne Wojcicki] plans to charge $1,000 for an extensive genetic profile and features to help track down lost relatives. And on June 18, the Generations Network announced that it's partnering with a lab, Sorenson Genomics, to start building its own database of cheek-swab-generated DNA reports on Ancestry.com."

Statens Arkivers Arkivalieronline: "Parish registers and population censuses on the Internet

The Danish State Archives Filming Centre digitises parish registers and population censuses in order to make them accessible via the Internet. The digitisation project is primarily accomplished through scanning of microfiches and microfilms. There is no fixed timetable for the launch of each parish register and population census on the Internet, as this is a successive process."

from this thread :-

Diplomatic Question - soc.genealogy.britain | Google Groups:
"Death Of Sir George Phillippo.
The death is announced at Geneva, at the age of 81, of the Hon. Sir George
Phillippo.
He held a number of Colonial appointments, including that of Chief Justice
of Hong-Kong, and was British Consul at Geneva from 1897 to 1910. He was
knighted in 1882.

I have been able to follow his career around various parts of the world,
but know absolutely nothing about his personal life. He was born in
Spanish Town, Jamaica c, 1833 and that's all I know."

The Federation of Family History Societies - News

from my email:-

FFHS - News - Newslist Subscription

GENEVA - is the online calendar of GENealogical EVents and Activities, which contains a full listing of known Family History Fairs, events and activities and can be found at http://geneva.weald.org.uk/ This is part of the GENUKI pages but is maintained on behalf of the FFHS as well, and member societies are encouraged to post details of their main events to this list. This is a free service and an ideal medium for raising the profile of any family history society event.

GENEVA: The GENUKI calendar of GENealogical EVents and Activities

This calendar is being run jointly on behalf of GENUKI and the Federation of Family History Societies. Event organisers are encouraged to check this calendar when picking a date to avoid clashes with other events in the same area. They are also encouraged to submit an entry for this calendar as soon as a date has been booked so that other organisers know about it and can try to avoid it.

In March 2007 the British Library announced major plans to move its historic newspaper collection from Colindale in North London to Boston Spa in Yorkshire by 201

Colindale Newspapers Migration Strategy: "The British Library holds the finest newspaper collection in the world. Over 30,000 people use the national newspaper collection every year.

The British Library announced on Thursday 1 March 2007 major plans to move its historic newspaper collection. Newspapers deteriorate quickly because of the poor quality of the paper they are printed on and there are growing concerns about the fragility of the collection, which is viewed and handled by more than 30,000 people every year. Fifteen per cent of the collection cannot be used by readers because of its poor condition. A further 19% is at high risk, and will soon have to be withdrawn from use.

The British Library is acting to provide readers better access and to preserve it for future generations. Many items we hold do not exist anywhere else."

FFHS - Home Page: "The Federation of family History Societies (FFHS) is an educational charity which exists to represent, advise and support its membership of family history societies and other genealogical organisations world-wide.

Our principal aims are: to co-ordinate and assist the work of societies or other bodies interested in family history, genealogy and heraldry; to foster mutual co-operation and collaborative projects to help researches; and to represent the interests of our members, and family historians"
